🧭 Finding your way around Odoo

The home menu, the search bar, filters and group-by, and the few shortcuts worth learning on day one.

Every Odoo app follows the same patterns, so once you know these you can work in any of them.

The home menu and the app switcher

The grid icon at the top left opens the home menu with every app you have access to. Inside an app, the same icon switches apps. Your browser's back button works as expected.

Views: list, kanban, form

  • List - a table. Click a column header to sort, tick rows to act on several at once (export, archive, update a field).
  • Kanban - cards in columns, usually one column per stage. Drag a card to move it.
  • Form - one record. Changes are saved when you leave the record or click the cloud icon; a red cloud means something is invalid.

The search bar does more than search

Type a word and Odoo offers to search it in different fields ("Search Customer for: ..."). Open the panel on the right of the bar for:

  • Filters - predefined and custom conditions. Filters in the same group combine with OR, different groups with AND.
  • Group By - turns a list into a grouped report with subtotals.
  • Favorites - save the current search to reuse it, or make it your default.

Shortcuts worth learning

PressTo
Alt (hold)Show the keyboard shortcut of every button on screen
Alt + SSave the record
Alt + CCreate a new record
Ctrl + KCommand palette: jump to any menu or record by typing

Where things usually are

Settings live under each app's Configuration menu; company-wide options under the Settings app. If a menu is missing, you probably lack the access right - ask your administrator rather than a developer.
