Odoo 20 was released in September 2026. Odoo's own release notes run to hundreds of items; this guide pulls out the ones that matter most for day-to-day users, plus the changes that could catch existing users out.
Key takeaways
- AI goes agentic: AI agents can create and update records, and Odoo can connect to external tools through MCP. All AI features now use credits bought through Odoo's in-app purchases (IAP).
- Work offline: records can be created, edited, archived and deleted without a connection.
- Simpler security: record rules are gone; access rights now carry their own domains.
- Lighter setups: Point of Sale, eCommerce and Sales can now run without the Inventory app, and stock valuation works without it too.
- Watch the renames: payment statuses, account groups, asset models and Field Service all changed. Check these before upgrading.
The headline changes
AI agents, MCP and credits
Odoo's AI can now act, not just answer: agentic automation with live progress updates and interactive replies (buttons for questions and permissions), creating and updating records, image generation and questions about files. Odoo can connect to external tools through MCP (Model Context Protocol), the model is selected automatically, and voice dictation is supported. "Topics" are renamed "skills", and conversations are stored for up to 30 days. The practical change for budgets: all AI features now need credits, bought through IAP.
Offline mode and a better everyday interface
You can create, edit, archive and delete records while offline, which matters for anyone working in warehouses, on the road or with patchy connections.
- Activities can be assigned to a person or a role, with better scheduling and tracking.
- Chatter can be filtered to conversations or tracked changes, and messages can be pinned. Emails support CC.
- Several records can be dragged and dropped at once in list and Kanban views; the calendar gets a side panel for unscheduling.
- Gantt views gain cell selection, buffers and drag-and-drop scheduling.
- Translation Mode and a translation wizard for text and HTML fields.
- Mobile: swipe down on the dashboard to open the command palette; date pickers use bottom sheets.
- Partner identifiers such as DUNS, link previews for shared Odoo website links, and new digest KPIs.
Simplified access rights
Record rules are removed. Instead, domains are set directly on access rights, which makes "who can see what" easier to read in one place. Changes to user groups are now logged in the chatter.
Apps without Inventory
Point of Sale, eCommerce and Sales (shipping orders) can now run without the Inventory app, and stock and valuation can be managed without it from Accounting. Smaller businesses can start lighter and add Inventory later.

For developers: technical changes
From Odoo's release notes: tracking values are removed (tracking messages are generated on the fly), push notifications move from Firebase to Odoo's own tools, mail records state their content source, and changes to user groups are logged.
From our own hands-on work porting custom modules to Odoo 20, these are the changes developers notice first:
ir.model.accessandir.ruleare replaced by oneir.accessmodel, loaded from anir.access.csvfile.- The web client runs on OWL 3: new state handling (
proxy),usePropsinstead of static props, and templates that referencethis.explicitly. t-escis no longer allowed in templates (uset-out), and icons use Material Symbols names.odoo.osv.expressionis gone in favour ofDomainobjects, andread_group()takes new arguments.- System parameters use typed methods (
get_str,set_str,get_booland so on), and binary fields expectBinaryBytesvalues. - Odoo ships code-upgrade scripts (
odoo-bin upgrade_code) that handle many renames, but their output needs review.
What it means for custom modules
For businesses with custom code, Odoo 20 is a bigger step than most releases. The new access-rights model, the switch to Material Symbols, the removal of tracking values and a new version of the web framework all affect custom modules. We tested this hands-on by moving a custom module from Odoo 16 to Odoo 20: read what broke and how we fixed it.
